Today I have been posting a bunch of videos of films that I and many other children of the 60's and 70's grew up watching in our classrooms. Young people today don't know about the fear people of my generation and earlier, grew up with. One of the results of this fear was/is the Survivalist/Prepper movements.
We were raised with the fear that our enemy, the Soviet Union would launch a nuclear attack on our nation. Killing millions and destroying our cities.
We had "Attack Drills" which were performed under the guise of "Tornado Drills" to keep from scaring us kids. These drill started in kindergarten and proceeded up through high school. Growing up in St. Louis, we also had "Earthquake" drills, and my elementary school had the CD Civil Defense Placard on the small gymnasium, and the padlocked large double steel doors over in the corner of a room that actually went out in front of the school under it's front lawn. I didn't know then what I learned many years later, that those doors were to a bomb shelter that would hold 35 people and supplies for them for about 6 months. It was one of the designated shelters for our county's Emergency Management leadership. Which was a joke, considering that we were 4 miles from Lambert International Airport and at the time, McDonnell-Douglas National Headquarters. Oh yes. St. Louis was a MAJOR target for the Soviet Union if war did break out.
I have mentioned here on the blog before of missile batteries around the St. Louis area that were supposed to shoot down any ICBM's if St. Louis was under attack. I was a kid, when one of the batteries actually fired a missile which could be seen in St. Louis even though the launch facility was over 40 miles away in Illinois. It wasn't reported on the news, it wasn't printed up in the newspapers, but many UFO stories started going around.
Imagine living under that THREAT, your entire life.
You don't know when you go to sleep at night if you are going to be alive in the morning.
Those of us who lived through those times, look around at what is happening today, and we start to worry.
Is it any wonder now why the Prepper/Survivalist movement is gaining strength?
And yet the Government looks at those who see this return to a Cold War mentality as a threat.
Why is that?
Why are we considered a threat?
Is it because we actually SEE what is going on and are taking measure to protect our families?
Or is it because others seeing us making preparations are becoming scared, because they don't have the moral courage to step up themselves?
Remember how Hollywood gave us not just a few but hundreds of movies about World War III and post apocalyptic wastelands. How many of us children at the time, saw those movies and became even more frightened?

Is it any wonder, why we are taking steps to protect our families?
And Millennials think we are insane, crazy, stupid.
They don't seem to understand what we have seen in our lives. What we have gone through in our lives.
In 1985, I raised my right hand and swore the Following Oath.
"I, Mark L. Anderson, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."
Eight months later, President Reagan had F-111 Fighter/Bombers deliver ordnance into Libya.
So now YOU know why many of the "OLDER" generation of American's are looking around and making quiet preparations.
