The AR-15 platform operates using a direct gas impingment (DGI) system
Although the barrel length and rate of twist affect the accuracy of the round, the additional factor of the length of the gas tube determines how much time the round takes to travel through the barrel.
As inertia peaks from the expending propellant, excess pressure behind the round travels through the gas tube, back to the upper receiver and is used to cycle the bolt carrier group.
Since the volume of gas expansion created by the propellant remains a constant, it is the length of the gas tube that primarily determines cycle times, feeding & ejecting reliability, and felt recoil.
