Ian at Forgotten Weapons, is putting that high speed camera to good use. Especially as it comes to showing how Long Recoil operates. Watch the video below and I'll add some commentary after.
Long Recoil Operation was patented by John Moses Browning (PBUH) a Mormon Gunsmith whose designs and patents are the basis for over 100 million firearms today.
In the video above Ian uses a Remington Model 11, which is based on Browning 's Auto-5, the worlds first successful semi-automatic shotgun. As Ian explained in the video the entire barrel recoils with the bolt, then the main recoil spring pulls the barrel forward, leaving the bolt and the fired shell to the rear. As the barrel clears the fired shell, the shell is kicked out by the ejector, then the shell lifter raises the next shell up to be fed into the chamber by the now forward moving bolt.
It is a very elegant system and it lead to the creation of one of the greatest machine-guns ever manufactured.
The Browning M2.
Without which the various wars our nation has fought would have been very different.
