I worked for over 35 years in a steel mill making metal the same way, only in heats of 20,000 pounds. And the removal of carbon was carried out in pretty much the same way, by blowing air through the molten bath. Mankind has come a long way, and yet we still rely upon the wisdom of those who came before us. How lucky that there were men like Bessimer who were able to learn from others, and persevere to the wisdom, to that of others who could learn from those who came before them, and were willing to admit that others had some very good ideas and were willing to continue to learn from them, and to use those ideas and to add onto them to come up with even more ideas that have stuck around for many, many years that served us well in previous days, and into the future.
