I remember reading the orignial story, "Roadside Picnic" in Junior High, in I think 1981. It was a "BIG DEAL" because of the film winning an award at a film festival. So my Social Studies teacher, the one who joked about the attempted assassination of President Reagan and said that he wished the shooter was a better shot, he gushed about the Soviet Union and how they had some of the best authors at that time. Yeah, you see where I'm going with this. Anyway I read the story and it touched me. While my teachers at school repulsed me. I found that I hated my teachers more and more, while I also found that I loved losing myself in a well written book.
