Please be very safe.  and while I know most of our readers here don't imbibe and handle firearms, there are newer and less experienced shooters and firearm owners out there who are NOT fully cognizant of the "Four Rules"


Please remember, a bullet can travel a Looooooong distance.  Even .22LR can travel up to 1.5 miles.  and remember that sniper that recently shot a terrorist at over 2 miles away?

Yeah, bullets can go a fair distance.  And what goes up, MUST come down.  And it comes down at very high speed and could injure or KILL someone.

Don't be that person that mishandles/misuses a firearm this Independence Day.

Don't get hurt, and don't hurt anyone else.

And PLEASE get home to your families safe, sound, hearty and hale.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!! Pay Attention to this.

DO NOT USE SMOKELESS GUN POWDER IN A BLACKPOWDER FIREARM.

The pressure cycle and differential can blow up your gun and KILL or MAIM you.

Black powder firearms are designed for a nice slow steady pressure profile. Smokeless powder generates SHARP, HIGH, FAST pressure spikes in addition to the much higher pressures of Black Powder.

YOU CAN BE HURT OR KILLED.

DO NOT DO IT!!!

NOT EVEN ONCE.

Firearms Safety!!!! - ALERT ALERT ALERT!!!!!

For the last 40 minutes or so I'm listening to my scanner and listening to the aftermath of either an IDIOT with a gun or an untrained person with a gun.

Long Story Short from what I can get over the scanner.  Guy either heard something and grabbed gun to go investigate or he was playing with it and wound up shooting himself in the leg.

So please if you have a Blog or are on Facebook, post the FOUR RULES on your blog or timeline.

Rule #1: ALL FIREARMS ARE ALWAYS LOADED.  Even if you just cleared and checked it, treat it as if it has a live round up the spout.  Firearms ARE NOT toys, they are tools which can be just as dangerous as a chainsaw or a power saw in wounding, maiming or killing, YOU or SOMEONE ELSE.

Rule #2: NEVER POINT A FIREARM AT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY.  A firearm can do more than discharge a bullet.  It can destroy LIVES and FAMILIES.  Each and EVERY BULLET that comes out of the muzzle end of a firearm has a POTENTIAL LAWSUIT attached to it.  Wrongful death, personal injury, negligence, not to mention possible CRIMINAL CHARGES.  So be sure there is no horseplay

Rule #3: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT.  What if you miss?  What if your bullet over penetrates?  (WHAT IS YOUR BACKSTOP)  Will it go through the person/wild animal/target you are shooting to go through a wall or over the hill and hit a child?  Hit a member of your own family?  What about if you miss and hit someone OTHER than who you were aiming at?  Do YOU want that to be on your conscious?  And refer to Rule #2 about LAWSUITS.

Rule #4:  KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE LINED UP AND YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.  Keep your BOOGERHOOK OFF the trigger until you are PREPARED and READY to FIRE.

Rule #5: NEVER TRY TO CATCH A DROPPED FIREARM. Doing so is more likely to result in an ND than it just hitting the ground. You can no longer guarantee you wont violate one of the first 4 while catching it. At most let it land and roll off your foot. (Rule #5 by Chance Ballew)

And my Personal Rule:

Rule #6: Carnegie Hall -  PRACTICE - PRACTICE - PRACTICE  Practice with your firearm so you CAN hit what you are aiming at.  Get as MUCH practice as you can, so if you HAVE to use your firearm, you hit ONLY what you aim at and no one or nothing else.  Also be sure that you are practiced at properly drawing your firearm from your holster and you can properly REholster it without shooting yourself or having an AD/ND.

The Four Rules

"The 40-year-old just joined the University of Maryland police force this summer. He was in training with city police. His training class was using an area with abandoned buildings when his instructor accidentally shot him in the head."

Just in case you are new to firearms the Four Rules are:

Rule One: All Firearms are always loaded at all times. 

That means you treat EVERY weapon as loaded, even after you clear it and physically and visually check the chamber.  Make that ESPECIALLY after you check the chamber.

Rule Two:  Never let the muzzle of the weapon cross anything you are not prepared to destroy or shoot.

That means never point it at anything you are not intending to actually shoot.  Firearms are NOT toys.  They are tools, and handled improperly they can kill or injure people, animals, vehicles, cars, aircraft you name it.

Rule Three:  Keep your finger off the trigger until such time as your sights are on the target.

Keep your boogerhook off the bang switch.  Until your sights are on your target your finger belongs OUTSIDE of the triggerguard.

Rule Four:  Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

YOU are responsible for any projectile that comes out of the barrel of your firearm.  Telling a police officer "I didn't know the bullet would go through that wall and kill the child on the other side." is a cold comfort for that child's parents.  Same thing with shooting outside.  If you don't have a proper berm, backstop or hillside to shoot into DON'T SHOOT!

Remember the first and BEST safety of ANY firearm is between your ears.  And if you don't understand what that means, you really don't need to be handling a firearm in the first place.

in this frenzy of buying because of the fears of a new gun ban, I have a favor to ask of you.


Please get training.

If you have never received competent firearms training, by that I mean on a proper range from a "Certified Instructor", please do so as soon as possible.

Contact Appleseed, the NRA, or any other "Certified" course.  I'm not talking your cop friend or your uncle or another friend unless they happen to have a Nationally Recognized Certification,  Such as the NRA Certification.


PLEASE, Get Training.  The lack of proper firearms training is one of the largest causes of firearms accidents.  And a firearms accident hurts people and makes the news, which could hurt the cause of our Rights and Freedoms to own or possess firearms.  Especially in this toxic political landscape.
