I don't have a Ruger 10/22  but I do have a Glenfield 60 which is the Marlin 60 and is a very reliable accurate small rifle.  You can find them used for as little as $100.00 if you look around, although most of the used Model 60's will need major cleaning as many people will shoot them until they stop ejecting right, then just spray some WD-40 or gun oil in them, work the action a few times and go back to shooting, instead of properly cleaning them.  I know mine which I paid $150.00 tax included for at a pawn shop needed a LOT of cleaning.  I plan on getting a small 2X scope for it and it should be capable of 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards.  More than accurate enough for 90% of your shooting desires.

The Henry AR-7 is also another good .22 rifle, I used to own one of the old Charter Arms AR-7's, but I had to sell it many years ago to pay some bills, so I finally replaced it with a Henry Arms version.

You will be seeing a post and video or two on the Glenfield and the AR-7 in a month or so.

I own several .22 pistols, although I prefer my Heritage Arms .22 LR/.22 WMR Single Action Revolver.  It's a sweet little shooter, but it does shoot high so that needs to be taken into account.  I also have several .22 conversion for both my 1911 and my AR-15 clone.

About the shotgun, I own a Maverick 88, and while it doesn't have a marine finish, for it's price point it IS a good firearm.  They are available here locally from Academy Sports for under $200.00, they do offer the 18 inch barrel version for the same price, but I personally prefer having a good hunting barrel in addition to the shorter home defense barrel.  On my personal Mav 88 I installed an ATI Folding pistol grip stock, and I looked for several years to find a 20" Ribbed barrel that I installed a Carlson's Rifled Choke Tube.  I feel this gives me the best versatility especially with the ability to use slugs all the way out to 300 yards with the rifled tube and still use shot when I need to.

AR-15 Clones, M Forgeries and many others can be purchased for as little as $450.00 up to several thousand.  You can mix and match uppers, calibers, optics, grips, fore ends, vertical forward grips, slant forward grips, just mix and match.  The AR-15 platform has been called the Barbie Gun by authors, gun writers, and the general firearm community for it versatility, utility and ease of use and modification.

And a Mosin is a good all around rifle, able to take man or beast out to 400+ yards if needed.  You used to be able to buy a Mosin for less than $80.00, nowadays if you can find one for under $250.00 you are doing good.  Ammunition is still easy to find for an affordable price even though you can't find the 880 round cases for under $100.00.

The whole take away from this, is if you are just getting started in firearms, there are a wide variety of firearms available to you.  From a snub nose revolver to high end target rifles, all you have to do is ask around and you will find out what may be right for you.

I have one of the Savage Takedowns, mine was rebadged as a house brand for Sears.  The Sears Model 102-35.  It shoots Shorts, Longs and Long Rifles, and it is VERY accurate.

Now I want to get an old Glenfield Model 60 aka Marlin Model 60.  An OLD one, not one of the newer production pieces.  I also want to get one of the Marlin Model 918's, the bolt action with a tube mag.

It would be great to have a 918 with a threaded barrel.  Being a boltie, you would only hear the firing pin striking the rim and a little "puff" as the bullet leaves the barrel.  If that.

That is an awful lot to spend for a rifle.  Personally, I like the idea of a bullpup rifle, and I enjoy shooting them, however one of my kids if left handed and has issues trying to shoot right handed, so I'd much rather have rifles that will not be an issue for any of my kids to fire.  My son has no problems shooting any of my firearms right now, left handed, not even the Chinese T-53 Mosin Copy.  The same couldn't be said of a bullpup like the Tavor.

If Kel-Tec made a 5.56/.223 bullpup similar to their RFB, I might consider getting one.

Some good Info.  And "Constructive Possession" has hammered more people, as they mention the person with short barrels for the AR's can get hammered HARD by BATFE.  So if you have an AR pistol and an AR Rifle, do NOT mix and match them.

Me personally, since I own an AR rifle, I have no intention of building an AR pistol for myself.

For what it is, I think this type of air rifle would be very good for vermin control.

When I used to live up in St. Louis, one of the municipalities had a MAJOR problem with the deer population.  The various Anti's, (Anti guns, anti hunting) would NOT allow for professional hunters to come and thin the deer population, which had EXPLODED.  An increase in deer vs car accident, destroyed yards and gardens and when I left the St. Louis area there was a small but measurable increase in destruction of habitat for other wildlife and disease due an accompanying tick population increase.

They tried trapping and relocating the deer and despite being expensive as all get out, it was actually killing more of the deer the "Anti's" wanted to save.

The amount of Derp and Herp and general stupidity of the "Anti's" will be self evident to you.

However one of these air rifles, especially an integrally suppressed one, in the hands of an experienced and  professional hunter, would both thin the herd to a manageable size, the meat by law, at least it was, in Missouri would go to the local Food Banks to help feed the needy.

I did leave a comment on the video for Airgun Depot, asking about the possibility of using Saboted bullets in this rifle.  Maybe I'll get a response.

Good question, I had planned on trying that while I had the rifle in hand before I sent it to Eric and Chad. I had a hard time finding a sabot that fit just right. The barrel on these is slugged at .457 and all the sabots that I could find at my local sporting goods store where .454, in theory it should work though...if you check out our guide page to the Texan we do have some chronny data for a few different bullet types

I've put 1,500 rounds through an AR rifle at one sitting before, but it was over an eight hour time period with cleaning after every 300 rounds.

This was INSANE. And I personally would NOT try it without more personal safety equipment.

Other than he sounds like he is trying to push the Lehigh products pretty cool.  Yes it even says that the Lehigh is the main ammo he is testing, but I would have liked to see him compare it against other types of the main carry ammo other than the the HST.  My main carry ammo is Golden Sabers, so I would have like to have seen him compare that against the same obstacles.

have gone out to the range to test whether 9mm can be an effective round past 100yards.  And the find out it is.



No surprise really.  As I and many other blogger have said and will always say, it is shot placement and not the caliber which is the most effective.  Even .25 ACP is effective in the hands of someone who places the rounds into the target properly.

However Eric seemed to be surprised that at 440 yards the 9mm was able to penetrate the ballistics gel dummy.  I've seen a hog get shot with a 9mm at almost 600 yards and it only took 1 Federal Hydrashock to take done the hog.  It was out of a Colt Ar-15 9mm Carbine and he said he aimed about 3 feet above the hog, but 1 round did take it down.

So remember, even a "Pip-Squeak" gun can do the job.  If the shooter does theirs.

Now they have put up their "5 Walkout guns List" and I agree with some of what they say, but not all.

My walkout gun list is only firearms I currently own and are firearms that are affordable for almost everyone.

#1: A 6" .357 Magnum - It can take everything from squirrel upto a bear with proper shot placement and ammunition.  It also has manageable recoil and can be fired weakhand easily.

#2: A 12 Gauge Pump Action shotgun - Mine has a pistol grip and a folding stock.  With the various loads available for the 12 gauge you can cover almost any animal in North America

#3: A break down .22 Pump action rifle -  Mine will shoot everything from CB Shorts upto .22 LR HV rounds.  Loaded with shorts it holds 18 rounds, with LR it holds 14 and breaks down into a package just a little longer than 17 inches.  With a semi-auto .22 you are limited to ONLY LR rounds unless you want to cycle the action by hand after each shot and some magazines in semi autos will not feed the shorter rounds properly.  And some .22LR semi autos also will not function properly with lower velocity ammunition, limiting you to HV ammo only.  And while I wouldn't want to try it, there have been cases of poachers taking Black Bear with .22 LR.

#4: A SKS - With the standard 10 round non-removable magazine and stripper clips.  The 7.62X39 has approximately the same oomph as the .30-30 round which still takes hundreds if not thousands of deer a year over 100 years after it's introduction.  So a SKS and a bandolier of stripper clips and you should be good to go.

#5: a 1911A1 in .45 ACP -  I have used mine to put down several animals from a dog upto a 900 pound steer.  Once again, shot placement and ammunition are the biggest factors in it's use.

Now my list isn't the be all end all and neither is the Eric and Barry's.  They are just guidelines.  And Eric and Barry work in a Pawn Shop/Gun Store.  I don't.  I listed just firearms I currently own and use.

So the only person who can decide if your walk out gun is the right one is "You".
