Old Model Charter Arms Undercover .38 Special

I had posted a brief blurb about this pistol 2 months back after I had first bought it. Now for some detail.

This is the old model Undercover revolver in .38 special with the exposed ejector rod.

With the exposed ejector rod, you could grasp the rod and pull it forward to open the cylinder to load or unload the revolver.

The reason why you would want to do something like that?  Look at the cylinder latch.  It's rather small, flat, and has a screw there, which if you weren't practiced with, you would spend minutes pushing on the screw instead of the latch, tearing up your thumb in the process, and if you were in a situation you had to reload fast, I doubt you could do it under stress.

The grips that come the Undercover from the factory are good for concealment purposes, but not that good for comfort if you plan on doing a lot of shooting.

Therefore I got a pair of Pachmayr Presentation Grips for it.  Yes they are larger and hard to conceal, but they are much more comfortable to shoot with.

They were a little hard to find though, as the newer Undercover models have a slightly different grip geometry, meaning they don't "Quite" fit this old model.  Through E-bay, I was able to find a pair of the old style grips which fit perfectly.

In this pic you can see the cutout and the placement of the post which witnesses and helps to hold the grips in proper alignment.

You can see my Barsony IWB holster I've gotten for it until I can have the chance to get a custom holster made for it, along with 2 six round Bianchi Speedstrips.

It actually fits inside the Barsony Holster very good.  My only complaint with the Barsony holster is that I prefer some type of thumb break for better retention.

Next to my old EDC to show you the size difference and why I like the Undercover for CCW.  About my only complaint I have with the Charter Arms Undercover, of this vintage is that I cannot use +P velocity ammunition through it unless I want to run the risk of stretching and damaging the frame.  Newer Charter Arms Undercovers don't have this issue, however you still want to be careful with a diet of +p ammunition.  I would recommend practice with standard velocity ammunition and the +P's for carry.  That was one of the reasons I carried the Taurus for as long as I did and the old Undercover I used to own was a Back Up Gun (BUG) only.  I could run a diet of 100% +P's through the Taurus with no problems and I have put several thousand rounds of +P's through the Taurus.  I just won't do it with my new to me Undercover.

I've already put several hundred 130 gr TMJ's through this Undercover and I am currently carrying Hornady 125 gr XTP's in it.  I just picked up a box of 158 gr XTP's I'll be using to reload my once fired brass which will probably become my carry load in this revolver.

Concealed Carry =/= Open Carry

A friend of mine who lives in Maine posted this new story about the reaction of a local politician when the idea of lessening restrictions of Concealed Carry passed the Legislature.  The Politician in question is a Democrat.

"Another numb statement from a Democrat.. "Obviously, carrying a firearm in the open alerts the public — and law enforcement — of the gun’s presence. But if someone is going to be allowed to carry a deadly weapon in secret, Dion said, that person should have to demonstrate he or she is responsible and knows how to use a gun safely." #1. A citizen doesn't need to be "allowed" to do anything...it's called a right. Read the US and state Constitutions. Also nowhere in either does it say that only government and police should have guns and the manner to which they may be carried. #2. Laws have never prevented criminals from committing crimes. You would think a former sheriff would know that. If laws were that effective we really wouldn't need cops, jails and prisons. #3. So by his statement if you carry a gun openly (100% legal and has been for years) you don't have to demonstrate that you are responsible and know how to use a gun safely...because people can see it. However if you carry a gun concealed for whatever reason then you should have to prove those things. Yea....he's a smart one. The way the law is written now, you can't have a loaded handgun in a vehicle (goes for ATV's and snowmobiles too) unless you go through the process of getting a permit. It's for safety reasons they say...bullcrap. A gun is a gun and it's not any less safe because of a fee paid and a piece of paper. I hope this goes through this time and becomes law. Of course even if it does, down the road somebody can fight to get rid of it."

The story he is referring to is the following from the Bangor Daily News:

"Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, is a former Cumberland County sheriff and Portland police officer. He said Friday that open carry and concealed carry are fundamentally different acts.

Obviously, carrying a firearm in the open alerts the public — and law enforcement — of the gun’s presence. But if someone is going to be allowed to carry a deadly weapon in secret, Dion said, that person should have to demonstrate he or she is responsible and knows how to use a gun safely.

“If you open carry down Congress Street into Monument Square [in Portland], it’s going to cause some alarm with some individuals. But at the very least, you’re announcing the fact and there’s an opportunity for the police or others to react accordingly if you do anything that should cause concern,” he said. “I think it’s a bit flip to say, ‘This is just about throwing a coat on.’”

Man Assaults Legal Concealed Carrier

Dang it I HATE excerpting a whole article but it's just so short.

"RIVERVIEW (FOX 13) -

Hillsborough deputies arrested a man who spotted someone with a gun, followed him into a Walmart, and tackled him. The problem? The man with the gun had a concealed weapons permit, and the man who rushed him didn't call 911 or alert store security.

According to the sheriff's office, Michael Foster, 43, saw Clarence Daniels, 62, in the Walmart parking lot with a gun holstered under his coat.

Foster followed Daniels into the store, put him in a choke-hold and brought him to the ground, the sheriff's office said. He then started yelling that Daniels had a gun.

A struggle ensued, with Daniels yelling that he had a permit. Security detained both men until deputies arrived.

They confirmed Daniels had a permit for the gun, and arrested Foster.

He is charged with one count of battery."

That is the whole of the story, however there are two pictures in the article.  And it looks like the man who was a licensed Concealed Carrier is black and the man who assaulted him is white.

THAT right there doesn't look very good.

Me personally, if I saw someone who was carrying concealed and accidentally uncovered their weapon and I was concerned I would keep an eye on them.  If I could plainly SEE that the weapon was in a holster however, I rally wouldn't be too concerned.  If they were "Mexican" carrying, I would be concerned.

A person who has a Concealed Carry License/Permit WILL use a proper Holster to safely carry their weapon.  Although I have seen a few IDIOTS with permit "Mexican" carry without a holster.  For the most part, gang bangers don't use holsters.  Reason number one, they don't want to spend the money, reason number two, they don't know which holster would fit their usually STOLEN weapon.

So if I see someone carrying in a holster, black or white.  I just make sure I pay attention to them and their body language and try to keep them in my sphere of awareness.  Other than that, I do nothing.

Israel to ease firearm restrictions

"Israel is to ease controls on carrying weapons for self-defence after a deadly Palestinian attack on a Jerusalem synagogue, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said on Tuesday.

"In the coming hours, I will ease restrictions on carrying weapons," he said in remarks broadcast on public radio, indicating it would apply to anyone with a licence to carry a gun, such as private security guards and off-duty army officers."

About time, only notice it is eased only for those who already have a license to carry.

What about the rest of the country?

Doubletapper  and I have chatted a few times through Google Messenger and he has tried to get me to either get my kids to go to school there or move there myself.

I told him, with the gun laws the way they are in Israel, no way.

I would have less freedom to own and carry a gun that "I" wanted to, in Israel than I would in Texas or Missouri.

Plus you can only buy an "Approved" handgun.  Screw that!  Plus I wouldn't be able to own a rifle unless I was active in the Military.

I'm sorry I enjoy shooting too much and due to my various injuries I can't carry one specific firearm at all times.

I need the flexibility to choose the proper firearm for the situation.

Be it short's and a t-shirt, a Kilt with a polo shirt or a suit and tie.  Each situation calls for a different type of firearm.

And Israel wouldn't allow me to have that flexibility.

So I'm glad they are easing their laws for their Citizens.  However they still have a long way to go.

Concealed Carry in Mississippi

"The Mississippi Supreme Court took the case on interlocutory appeal, and rendered a unanimous decision on August 29, upholding House Bill 2. The Supreme Court’s decision was quite terse, leading the reader to infer that either: a. The Supreme Court found the trial court’s reasoning so persuasive that the Supreme Court could not engage it, or b. The Supreme Court fund the trial court’s reasoning so ridiculous that the Supreme Court chose not to waste time refuting it in detail.

Either way, the result marks one more way in Mississippi has decided to discard a legal remnant of Jim Crow, and to instead, in the words of the late Hubert Humphrey, “walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.”

The lengths that some of the old Southern Democrats went to, to ensure that blacks and undesirable people be denied the us of Arms to protect themselves, simply boggles the mind.

I would kill someone

or at least wring their neck.  And then probably have a heart attack.

You may remember that I bought my two Tokarevs and my family bought 5 Taurus Model 82's from J&G.  We have had no complaints about any of our firearms purchases from J&G, and I expect I will have no issue with this newest acquisition.

I tried to work a deal with the young man taking my order, always have to try to strike a deal and get a better price.

After I get my pistol I know that it will need a full strip down and clean, J&G is good about making sure the firearms they sell are in good condition, but every new to me firearm gets a detailed strip and clean so I can check for myself.  Plus it will help familiarize me more with what may become my daily carry piece now that warmer weather is moving in down her in south Texas.

One thing I will have to do however is to start researching for a proper carry load.  I've ordered FMJ, but I know that the .32 ACP is considered a somewhat weak cartridge for defense, but any firearm is better than none.

And this should be a lot easier than my old Taurus Model 82 and 2 speedloaders I normally carry on the road.

AND J&G!!! If you folks read this, can we still work a deal?  ;)

p.s. if anyone else decide to get one of these, could you tell them where you got the link from?  pleaseeeeeeeeeee, still trying to work up a deal of some sort to get a discount from J&G ;),  I dunno maybe an official T&E arrangement where I get 25% off the cost of the T&E piece if I decide I want purchase it for myself. They run some interesting firearms through their inventory.  They used to carry the AK-47 bull pup AK variant.  I would have loved to be able to shoot one of those, simply because of the fact it was used in Serenity by Jayne against the Reavers, granted it was dressed up and hard to ID properly.  However the AK47 bull pup was used in so many of the movies I enjoy such as Kurt Russell's Soldier and the aforementioned Serenity.  And yes those two links are major time sinks, I should know I'm also a member of that site as well and have worked on editing several of the movies, in fact I think the pics of my personal Sears Ranger 102.35/Savage Mod 29A and Astra .357 Target Model are still in there.  I also took many of the screen caps for Lone Wolf McQuade, which I think one of the other members has replaced with screen caps from the Blue Ray version of the film.  But I have diverted enough attention away from my bleg, if you do buy one of these please give my humble blog a H/t to the J&G people kai'thanx.
